Study Medicine at Edge Hill University

Edge hill has newly started offering Medicine at their university which began in September 2020 and their new medical course aims to have a strong community-centred focus. The integrated programme lasts five years and offers early clinical exposure andhas strong emphasis on themes of professionalism, teamwork and safety in the clinical environment.

The first year focuses on fundamentals of life sciences and the body in health. There is a systems-based approach to learning and students also learn about some social science and public health principles. The second year focuses on patients which involves understanding illness and its social contexts for patients. Students will have more placements in different clinical settings and will also take part in a community-based project.

In the third year, clinical exposure expands and students learn about care for specific groups of patients, enhance clinical skills which includes communication and professionalism, etc. From the fourth year, students get to explore the multitude of different specialties within medicine and surgery and students will gain an understanding of how primary and secondary care interact and integrate with each other when caring for a patient.

The fifth and final year, referred to as an ‘apprentice year’, focuses on preparing to become a junior doctor through student assistantships and specialist placements. Students will work on expanding, applying and consolidating the clinical knowledge acquired from throughout the course.
